Circulation Questions

How do I check out library books?

Borrowing privileges are available to currently enrolled University at Buffalo students, faculty, and staff. To borrow materials, bring your UB card and the items you wish to check out to the circulation desk.

How long can I check out a book for?

Loan periods for materials depend on the borrower’s status at the university. View Circulation Loan Period Information for further details.

Can I check out a periodical (journal)?

Sometimes periodicals (journals) may circulate briefly; ask for details at the circulation desk.

Where are the photocopiers located?

Photocopiers are located in each library unit; view the Library Floor Plans for exact locations.

Can I print in the libraries?

Yes, printing is available from the Library Research Stations, as well as the Cybrary Stations. View Printing in the UB Libraries for more information.

Can I print from my laptop?

UBIT is currently testing a program to enable printing from your personal computer to printers in the public computing sites. For more information, see iprint anywhere.

I need to use a scanner. Do you have one?

Scanners are available for use on the south side of the Capen 1st floor Cybrary, in addition to the 2nd floor Lockwood Cybrary. The scanning stations have 30 minute time limits. Please view Scanning in Public Computing Service Areas for further information on the scanning stations.

Reference Questions

I failed the Library Skills Workbook. What do I do?

If you have failed the Library Skills Workbook, you will receive an e-mail notification through your UB email account with instructions on what to do if you did not pass. However, you will not receive any notice until you have completed each of the 5 sections and the RETAKE of all failed sections. How do I cite this source?

The Citing Sources guide provides information and examples to help you cite your sources. If you are looking for help with APA or MLA citations, you may also wish to look at easybib, a free bibliography composer.

Do you have my text book for class?

The University at Buffalo Libraries do not purchase textbooks for UB courses. See also: Textbooks.

However, former students occasionally donate his or her textbooks to the library. If you know the title or author of a particular book, search BISON the UB Libraries Catalog to locate the item within the UB Libraries. If you need help searching, Ask a Librarian.

I'm looking for the fiction section. Where is it?

The University at Buffalo Libraries do not have a general fiction collection to browse. However, there are fiction books within the libraries. To locate fiction books, try one of the following:

  • If you know the title or author of a particular book, search BISON the UB Libraries Catalog to locate the item within the UB Libraries. If you need help searching, Ask a Librarian.
  • Visit the Leisure Reading Collection.

The article that I need says that I have to log in/ pay for it. What do I do?

No, you do not have to pay for an article. When you encounter a situation like this, check the UB Libraries for the print or electronic version of the journal which the article was published in:

To find a print journal from the UB Libraries home page, click on the Catalog tab. Use the drop down menu to search Title begins with and search BISON for the title of the journal.

To find an electronic journal from the UB Libraries home page, locate the Find Library Materials drop down menu and click on Electronic Journals. Use the drop down menu to search Title begins with and search for the title of the journal.

Ask a Librarian if you need help searching for the print or electronic journals.

If you find that we do not own the journal article, you can request the item through Interlibrary Loan using the ILLiad system.
