Announcements and Discussion Topics:

  1. Steve Roberts welcomed Beth Adelman to the Directors Council representing the Law Library during Jim Milles’ sabbatical.
  2. Steve Roberts received notice of the WNYLRC 2008 Regional Bibliographic Data Base (RBDB) grant program. He will disseminate the application materials to Directors Council members. Deadline for applications is August 3, 2007. UB Libraries are currently engaged in three RBDB-funded initiatives.
  3. UB’s new Institutional Repository Task Force recently began its meetings. This Task Force was established and charged by the Provost. Steve Roberts, Austin Booth, and Mark Ludwig represent the Libraries on the Task Force. These members mentioned a current problematic practice that they hope will be addressed via the work of the Task Force, that is, the deleting/dumping of content from UB Learns. It is felt that this material should be retained as part of the institutional record.
  4. Steve Roberts mentioned that the SUNY administration wants to move the SUNY University Press to one or more of the SUNY research center campuses. A forthcoming Mellon study will address the merger of university presses and libraries. The UB Provost, Chief Executive Officer, and Steve Roberts are investigating the issue.
  5. Steve Roberts announced that the Libraries are expecting a $500,000 addition to the acquisitions budget from Tech Fee funds, for FY 2007-08. Steve is advocating for a regularized annual percentage increase, to be negotiated in 5-year periods. Austin Booth reported on current SUNY conversations regarding funding/payment options for ScienceDirect.
  6. Judy Adams-Volpe disseminated the 2006-2007 University Libraries Progress Report. She also discussed and requested input for a document outlining UB Libraries Development priorities for the period 2007-2012. This document was requested by University Advancement.
  7. Steve Roberts discussed his development of a brief document outlining strategic Libraries issues for the near future. This document was requested by the University administration. Directors Council members suggested additions related to digital libraries/institutional repository, initiatives for outreach programs and personalizing information.
  8. Steve Roberts provided an update on space planning issues at UB.
  9. The report of the Digital Libraries Task Force was presented to the Directors Council. Steve Roberts praised the insight, scope, and detail evident in the report and recommendations. The Directors Council accepted the recommendations of the Task Force. The Libraries will move forward on establishing a Digital Initiatives Unit and recruiting a director.
  10. The UBdigit review board, which establishes priorities and reviews proposals for creating digital collections, will be reconstituted with representatives for collections, technical issues, technical services, faculty, and information literacy. Stacy Person will chair the group.
  11. Gemma DeVinney led a discussion regarding UB Libraries policy related to leave accrual for participation in the SEFA Day of Caring. The Directors Council decided that Libraries staff who participate in this program WILL NOT have to charge leave time. The Day of Caring will be held on the third Wednesday in August this year.
