Announcements and Discussion Topics:
- Steve reported that there have been requests to provide more detailed accounts of DC meetings. The confidential nature of many of the discussion topics and the time needed to write up detailed minutes are factors that led to the brief format now in use.
- Gary distributed “Considerations for Workstation Access Policies” formulated by HSL public services staff, Buffalo State’s policy on library computer use, and proposed changes to the Workstation Access Card Policy at UB. HSL has implemented a temporary policy and deactivated cards issued during the past 6 months. This has alleviated problems at HSL but now APL, Capen and Lockwood are noticing an increase in the number of youths. The DC discussed the policy in the context of our depository library status and the need for a careful publicity campaign.
- Steve reported on recent meetings with Sean Sullivan, Dennis Black, Elias Eldayrie, Robert Shibley and the space consultant and their walk through the facilities. Steve noted that the library facilities were crowded and vibrant during the walkthrough, which reflected well on our need for capacity.
- Steve reported on his meeting with Deborah McKinzie to discuss the joint hiring of a major gifts development person.
- The collections report prepared by Austin and the Collections Committee with Steve’s cover memo as sent to the Provost will be posted on the staff website.
- Karen reported that the ILL task force is moving along. The charge for a task force on storing a SUNY copy of record was distributed; that group is just beginning its work.
- Margie reminded everyone to use the UB Libraries News Blog to announce events, exhibits, etc. Judy’s office will take on responsibility for the blog.
- The 2007-8 guidelines for proposing a Conversations in the Disciplines conference were distributed to DC members earlier. These conferences are a lot of work, but it might be interesting to propose a program on the 21st century library.
- Steve would like to see consistency and coherence in Libraries web pages and publications, a uniform design and recognizable visual identity. He would like to move ahead with a search for a web/graphics designer.
- Steve, Gary and Austin reported on meetings they had with CAS and Bioinformatics faculty.
- Jim noted that he was interviewed by WIVB TV and will appear on the 11:00pm news on Thursday, Feb. 1 in a segment about the use of YouTube in criminal investigations.
