BIOSIS Citation Index and BIOSIS Previews and [Biological Abstracts / RRM (Reports, Reviews and Meetings) combined], is a comprehensive source for biology information. BIOSIS Previews is now compiled and produced by Thomson Reuters. BIOSIS provides access to more than 18 million citations (print and online; about 500,000 new citations are added annually) in the biological literature. Coverage includes: agriculture, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biomedicine, biotechnology, botany, ecology, genetics, genomics, microbiology, molecular biology, pharmacology, physiology, proteomics, public health, and zoology.

Leads to citations and abstracts to journal articles, conference papers, books, U.S. Patents, and technical reports.

Additional BIOSIS Resources are available, such as the Biology Browser and the Index to Organism Names, which are digital resources for developing search strategies. The Biology Browser provides links for the life sciences information community, and the Index to Organism Names is the world's largest online database of scientific organism names. Web of Knowledge also provides various online training guides.

BIOSIS Citation Index and BIOSIS Previews are now provided to the University at Buffalo from the Thompson Reuters Web of Knowledge platform. These databases can be search individually by themselves as BIOSIS Previews or BIOSIS Citation Index or as part of a federated search across all of the Web of Knowledge databases. You also can search in groups by starting your search in the Web of Knowledge and open the drop-down menu for Databases (you should open the “More options/values” link) in the blue-shaded Refine Results tab on the left of you screen and selecting the database you wish to search.

BIOSIS Citation Index allows for Cited Reference Searches, exactly as allowed in the Web of Science database, and has the exact same content as BIOSIS Previews, which does NOT allow for Cited Reference searches.

Right AND Left Truncation: Right-hand truncation puts an asterisk (*) at the right side of the word stem, e.g. “biochem*” retrieves biochemical, biochemically, biochemistry. Left-hand truncation places the asterisk (*) on the left side of the word stem, e.g. “*degradation” retrieves degradation, phytodegradation, biodegradation, etc. Both left and right truncation can be used simultaneously; i.e., *degrad*.
