APA Changes

APA has implemented some brand new changes in the hopes of simplifying and standardizing references, especially when it comes to electronic equivalents of print journals. Here's a link to the Electronic Media and URLs page with a number of significant changes in APA's citing of electronic references:

The "APA Style Guide to Electronic References (PDF)" (June 2007) is also available for downloading for $12.

I have requested that we get a PDF copy here at the library to make available with the Manual. You may wish to purchase your own copy to have it handy.

Along with the electronic style changes they've also made the following change, taken from the first link above:

"For journal articles, always include the journal issue number (if available) along with the volume number, regardless of whether the journal is paginated separately by issue or continuously by volume. This change in reference style from the fifth edition of the Publication Manual is intended to make the format for journal article references more consistent."

I also like this guide for its clear examples.

Nurse Theorist Dorothea Orem

A short obituary is available on Dorothea Elizabeth Orem who died Friday, June 22, 2007. She was 92. More information on her theory can be found on the Nursing Theory Page, and in Understanding the Work of Nurse Theorists: A Creative Beginning and Nursing Theorists and Their Work.

Journal Info is a new online database that brings together information on 18,000 journals from a number of other resources into one place.

Entries include information on reader accessibility, quality, and cost. It includes the "eigenfactor," and a link to ISI's Journal Citation Reports Impact Factor.

Journal Info was developed by Lund University Libraries with support from National Library of Sweden.

"Hospital Compare" Web Site

The American Nurses Association (ANA), The American Hospital Association (AHA), Federation of American Hospitals (FAH), and Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) launched the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA), a national public-private collaboration to encourage hospitals to voluntarily collect and report hospital quality performance information.

The HQA announced on June 21st that it will add enhanced hospital quality information to its public Hospital Compare Web site.

You can search by state and county.
