Interesting research reported in the current issue of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology indicates that overweight children may have fewer caries that their counterparts of normal weight.The study analyzed data from nearly 18,000 children who participated in two separate major surveys that were part of the large and ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In younger children (aged 2-5) there were no differences in rates of dental caries. However, among the older children (aged 6-18), both those who were at risk of becoming overweight and those who were already overweight had less tooth decay.
