Thyroid Dysfunction in the Elderly
VHS WK 250 A237 2000
Thyroid dysfunction is common among the entire adult population and even more prevalent in the elderly. In fact, either overt or subclinical hypothyroidism is present in 15% of those over the age of 60. Clinical recognition of hypothyroidism in the elderly can be difficult because many of the signs and symptoms are similar to changes that occur with normal aging. Hyperthyroidism in older patients tends to present with more frequent cardiovascular manifestations and less obvious adrenergic symptoms. In this videotape, a leading expert in the field of endocrinology will discuss the various forms of thyroid dysfunction, causes, treatments and surgical indications for each.

Prostate problems an update for the primary care practitioner
VHS WJ 752 R761p 2003
Each year, millions of men present to their physicians with nonspecific symptoms that might signal prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or prostate cancer. With the aging of the US population, the rates of prostate disease are likely to rise even further. Dr. Romas outlines useful strategies for differentiating inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the prostate, and discusses the medical and surgical options for treatment. Effective drug therapy for prostatitis and BPH now permits most cases to be managed in the primary care setting. For patients with prostate cancer, the role of the primary care practitioner centers mainly on screening and diagnosis; Dr. Romas summarizes the current practice guidelines for both, and discusses the dilemmas surrounding prostate-specific antigen (PSA)as a screening tool. These recommendations will help primary care physicians recognize prostate diseases in their earliest and treatable stages, reduce their morbitity and mortality, and improve patients’ quality of life.
