Welcome!

I am the librarian at the Health Sciences Library that works with the Nursing School.

Here’s my nursing information page with my contact information.

You can also get help by emailing ASKHSL@buffalo.edu or calling the Reference Desk at 829-3900 x 102. Since I will be away part of this semester, my colleagues Michelle Zafron and Dean Hendrix will be happy to lend you a hand.

Nursing Research is Important!

Interview with Dr. Grady, National Institute of Nursing Research Director - “From childbirth to end-of-life care, nursing research is aimed at helping patients across the entire lifespan.”

Changing Practice, Changing Lives: Ten Landmark Nursing Research Studies

Making a Difference: Part Two - 16 vignettes of programs of research which have made a difference in practice (Completed in 2003).

Evaluating Web Pages (& Periodicals)

Since anyone can put up anything on the Internet - it pays to be a cyber skeptic and use your critical thinking skills.

You are welcome to take this 16 minute tutorial, Evaluating Internet Health Information (or copy link: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/webeval/webeval.html) produced by the National Library of Medicine

Data Sources and Databases

  • Three databases you need to know about: Nursing Reference Center, CINAHL and MEDLINE
  • UB's Multisearch
  • MedlinePlus - an authoritative, trusted source for health information from the National Library of Medicine.

But what about * Google Scholar
and * Wikipedia?

The library offers classes and tutorials on searching.

E-journals

Click on the E-journals link on the Health Sciences Library's main page

What does "Peer-reviewed" or "Refereed" mean?

Use the Ulrich's Periodicals Directory to find out if a jounal is refereed. The databases I have listed in the previous section - CINAHL, Nursing Reference Center, Medline - take special care to include primarily peer-reviewed journals.
