MiniMed School Resources
The UB MiniMed School Program provides an opportunity for individuals who did not pursue a medical degree to learn about many topics of interest in the medical profession. The MiniMed School offers courses modeled after the material taught to medical students. The courses are open to the general public for a nominal fee. These resources, which are organized by course subject, are compiled to coincide with topics presented in each class.
The Brain: Function & Dysfunction
The brain is a complex structure that plays a significant role in controlling our body and our emotions. Neuroscience is of interest to the medical community and health science practitioners and clinicians continue to study the brain in a variety of contexts. Some of the topics that will be addressed throughout these MiniMed School sessions include:
- Your Amazing Brain: Understanding its Structure and Function
- To be, or not to be...How We Make Decisions
- Stroke and Acute Brain Injury
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Neurological Basis for Bad Habits
This page contains a list of articles that are relevant to the specific topics that will be discussed with the MiniMed School courses. Following these articles is a list of general websites, journals, books, and audiovisual materials that will provide you with comprehensive information about brain structure, function, and research.

The Brain: Selected Resources
The purpose of this resource guide is to provide information on the brain. Some databases and online journals are only available by subscription, but all resources may be accessed in the Health Science Library.
Internet Resources
Brain Basics: Know Your Brain
This site, maintained by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, provides information on the different parts of the brain, how we process information, and different types of neurological disorders.
MedlinePlus: Brain Diseases
MedlinePlus.gov is a site that has been developed and maintained by the National Institutes of Health and is known for providing accurate consumer health information. This site contains comprehensive information about specific conditions, brain anatomy, related research, and much more!
MedlinePlus: Brain Cancer
Another informative website from MedlinePlus, this page provides detailed information in regard to brain cancer symptoms, diagnosis, screening, therapy, nutrition, and treatment options.
The Secret Life of the Brain
PBS aired a series of episodes about brain anatomy and function, as it changes throughout our lifetime. This website is designed to be a supplement to the documentary series, providing interactive tutorials and 3-D models, a history of the brain and brain research, as well as detailed information from each documentary. The “Infant Vision” feature within the “Baby’s Brain” episode was particularly interesting.
Society for Neuroscience: Brain Briefings
A series of two-page newsletters explaining how basic neuroscience discoveries lead to clinical applications. This very comprehensive site examines how a number of injuries, interactions, and conditions effect the brain.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Stroke
A great place to start in order to locate statistics, basic information, and resources related to this condition. Be sure to check out their fact sheets and the reports from MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report).
Mayo Clinic: Brain Aneurysm
One of three pages related to brain injury from the trusted Mayo Clinic website.
Mayo Clinic: Brain Attack (Stroke)
This page includes an extensive and informative section on stroke prevention.
Mayo Clinic: Brain Tumor
The section on complementary and alternative medicine is a notable addition to this page.
NIMH: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
This website about post-traumatic stress disorder (from the National Institute of Mental Health) contains a link to a reader-friendly and informative fact sheet for this disorder.
