Overview

Passion & fury the emotional brain
“Passion and Fury: A four-part series that looks at the primal emotions that are generated in the brain, and how nature and nurture combine to make us feel the way we do.” Part 1: Anger. “This program examines anger, from its primordial roots in self-defence to its expression in modern violence. We meet several men who have lost control of their anger and committed violent acts. One killed his wife for not obeying him; another smashed a car with a sledge hammer while enraged. Each of the men appear gentle and penitent in their quieter moments. What possesses them to lose control?” Part 2: Love. “This program examines the complexity of the emotion we call love, from the burning desire that can strike suddenly, to the giddy euphoria of falling in love. What is the incredible bond a mother feels for her infant, and how does it relate to the feeling couples may have after a lifetime of living together?” Part 3: Fear. “Fear is the most primal and powerful emotion, from its evolutionary origins in the involuntary fight-or-flight survival instinct, to its essential function as a learning tool today. A pilot tells how, as his plane was running out of fuel, his brain took control, suppressing the panic that other passengers experienced, and allowing him to make a rocky but safe premature landing. Fear activated his survival instinct.” Part 4: Happiness. “Drawing a distinction between the lasting state of happiness and the pursuit of instant pleasure, the program explores the evolutionary role of happiness, and asks what happens in the brain, and possibly in our genes, that make some people happy and others sad.”

New hope for recovery in schizophrenia compliance and long-term treatment
This film begins by showing that patient compliance with drug therapy among schizophrenics is often poor. This often leads to increased hospitalization, suicide attempts, and shorter lengths of time between relapses. Often, it was the many side effects associated with the first generation of antipsychotics that led to non-compliance. Risperidone and the other second generation antipsychotics have done much better in that they have fewer side effects, and so they have led to better compliance, and longer times between relapses. The long-acting injectable forms of risperidone and other second generation antipsychotics which will soon be on the market are discussed. The first generation injectables have been largely abandoned in the U.S. (largely because of the side effects of the drugs themselves), but studies in Europe show that patients prefer the injectable form of risperidone. These may be the next form of drug delivery that will be effective and aid compliance.

Management of bipolar disorder from acute mania to maintenance - a case based approach
Bipolar disorder is a common but multifaceted clinical problem that is part of a spectrum of mood disorders ranging from simple to complex. Diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder can be challenging, as patients with bipolar disorder may present in a variety of treatment settings, from a school health clinic to an emergency department. They also may present with a variety of symptoms characteristic of bipolar disorder or of other psychiatric or physical illnesses. Available options for acute and maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder are expanding. New clinical data support the use of atypical antipsychotics, as adjunctive, combination, or even first-line therapy, in the treatment of mania and depression. The program Management of Bipolar Disorder From Acute Mania to Maintenance: A Case-Based Approach uses actual case examples to illustrate effective strategies for identifying and managing acute manic episodes of bipolar disorder and for maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder. It explains when psychiatric referral and/or consultation by primary care physicians is warranted and discusses the role of primary care physicians in the management of patients with bipolar disorder when access to psychiatric services is limited or lacking.

The Stockholm solution new therapies for eating disorders
At the famous Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, researchers Per Sodersten and Cecilia Bergh have developed a new treatment for eating disorders that is in direct opposition to the current therapies. This is because instead of understanding eating disorders as caused by psychiatric illness, they see the psychological problems associated with eating disorders as a result of the starvation of the eating disorder. The eating disorder, the risk factors which are too little food and too much exercise, then may lead to starvation, which then result in the psychological symptoms associated with eating disorders. At their clinic, they teach patients how to eat properly again, and they see the psychological problems begin to disappear. They report stunning results. Seventy-five percent of their patients are in remission after one year, and of these patients, ninety percent are still in remission after five years. Since they are challenging the conventional beliefs about the etiology of eating disorders, Sodersten and Bergh are having trouble getting their research taken seriously in the scientific community.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders in the United States, affecting as many as 19 million people annually. Diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders can be challenging, as an anxiety disorder frequently coexists with another anxiety disorder or with a mood disorder–most notably, depression. An anxiety disorder can cause significant impairment in social and occupational functioning; the presence of comorbidity can lead to even greater impairment. In this video, Dr. Alan Siegel discusses the anxiety disorders that can present in primary careincluding generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobiasand offers practical advice for diagnosis and treatment.
