Overview
The Selection Committee commended the Crossroads Project for providing a new model for the use of "left over" (interstitial) spaces, found in cities across the country. The intent of the project was to revitalize such a zone surrounding the Milwaukee River's historic 1925 Holton Street Viaduct. The resulting three interwoven project elements: a bus shelter that serves as a gateway into the project, the Urban Plaza that acts as a civic connector and media garden, and the Marsupial bridge that offers a new pedestrian and bicycle connection joining the east and west banks of the river, were also cited for excellence in urban design. Overall, the project elevated the design of Milwaukee's urban infrastructure and provided a significant node to a developing network of pedestrian connections to and around the Milwaukee River.
