Overview

The Village is a private, nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to revitalizing its host neighborhood through the arts. Begun in 1986 as a summer project to engage neighborhood children in building a community park, the village has grown into a major provider of arts-inspired programs in education, land transformation, construction, and economic development.

The organization serves over ten thousand low-income, primarily African-American youth and families in North Philadelphia. It seeks to build community through innovative arts, educational, social, construction and economic development programs. In all of its activities, the Village seeks to do justice to the humanity and social conditions of people in North Philadelphia and similar urban situations.
