This guide provides sources that will assist you in beginning research in the University at Buffalo Libraries for WS 350 – Gender Issues Cont Africa. This is not an exhaustive guide, but a mechanism for starting research and how to find related sources. Ask a librarian for additional assistance.
Finding Books
BISON – The UB Libraries Catalog
Search the UB Libraries Catalog, BISON, to find books and other items on your topic, including audio-visual materials and government documents. Please note the library location and call number for the titles that interest you. You may search by:
- Title - Democracy and the rise of women’s movements in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Author – Clarke, Kamari
- Keyword –
- women and aids and Africa
- women and poverty and Africa
- Browse the list for items relevant to your research topic
When you find a book title of interest, click on the title of the book to open the record for it. Scroll down the page to find the Subjects assigned for that specific title. Clicking on the subject terms or searching with variations of them will lead to more books on your topic.
Some subject terms of interest may be:
Sexual Behavior – Africa
Sex discrimination against women – Africa
Women – Africa – Economic conditions

Finding Articles
- For relevant databases, please visit the Resources by Subject – Global Gender Studies page. This page defaults to a news blog so you will need to click on the tabs for “Top Resources” and “Databases.” These 2 tabs list online databases that contain the full text of an article or the source of the print text of an article. To learn more about each database’s coverage click on the “More Info” link.
How to search for articles or citations to articles:
- Start searching using keywords that describe your topic. Join more than one term using AND, and like terms using OR.
Search Concepts
- Boolean operators are and, or, and not. Search terms may be combined with Boolean operators to broaden or narrow a search.
Boolean Operators (Logic Operators)

And
- Narrows your search
- Retrieves citations containing BOTH salaries AND college athletes
- Usually used for unrelated terms

Or
- Broadens your search
- Retrieves citations containing EITHER elderly OR aged
- Usually used for synonyms (different words that mean the same thing or like terms)
In the database Academic Search Complete perform the following search:
- In the first search box, type the words: Africa
- In the second search box, type in the word: poverty
- In the third search box, type in the words: women or girls
- Then click on the SEARCH button.
