The Graduate Group for Queer Studies wants to see you work it.
That is, the GGQS is planning this semester and next to conduct several Intensive Paper Workshops, devoted to ‘in progress’ work developed by you, related to ideas and problems in and around queer theory. Somewhat more informal than the usual “Works-in-Progress” events we’re accustomed to, these workshops are designed to examine work that you have a definite investment in, yet is still very much in process – a seminar paper, a conference paper, etc. which you would like to continue to develop and refine. As opposed to a faculty respondent, these papers will be subjected to the rigorous examination of your peers.
Queer theory often prides itself on errancy when it comes to strict definition; nonetheless, what are we looking for? A few suggestions: a structuring idea for GGQS this year is reflexive consideration of what queer theory names, and exploration of what else it might be, in deviation from the characteristic trends of current scholarship in the field. Consequently, any work that takes up the question ‘why queer theory?’ is of great interest. Also, in light of next semester’s Humanities Institute/Queer Theory Workshop’s (first-ever!) conference, “At the Limit: Pornography and the Humanities,” as well as Tim Dean’s pornography seminar, work that takes up the intersection of queer theory and pornography is obviously welcomed. Given queer theory’s amorphousness, however, as well as its ability to permeate many different discourses, take these as only two suggestions among many: any submitted work will be considered.
Please contact Matt Pieknik, President, GGQS at (mpieknik@buffalo.edu) at your earliest convenience if interested. In the meantime, please forward this to any appropriate student groups or departments with whom you may be affiliated.
