You Need to Change Your Westlaw Password

Posted on: | by Christine Anne George |

Attention all SUNY Buffalo Law faculty, staff, and students:

Westlaw has announced that all academic users will need to reset their passwords or risk losing access during the spring semester. We were told that the password reset is for security reasons. We do not know what the deadline will be for making these changes, but if you update your password now you will not be prompted to do so later in the semester.

To change your password, login to your Westlaw account and click “Update” on the left-hand side of the homepage next to your name.

Westlaw 1

Then click “Manage OnePass Profile” in the top right-hand corner of the popup window.

Westlaw 2

Finally, enter your new password into the appropriate fields and click “Save.” Passwords must be between 8-16 characters and contain at least 3 of the required features (uppercase, lowercase, symbol, and number), so Buffalo#1 would work, for example.

Westlaw 3

You should then receive an email confirming that your OnePass Profile has been updated.

If you have any questions or problems, please contact cgeorge3@buffalo.edu.

Posted on: | by Christine Anne George |

With today’s balmy temperature, summer doesn’t feel too far away. If you’re a SUNY Buffalo Law student (or planning to hire one), now’s the perfect time to start thinking about your summer legal research options. Check out this handy chart to find out what’s fair play and what’s restricted.

Online Resources – Summer Use 2013 – SUNY Buffalo Law Students*

Bloomberg Bloomberg Law provides unlimited access to students over the summer regardless of their use. Students may use their Bloomberg Law  access over the summer while they are working at a firm, corporation for a judge or governmental agency.  This is a standing Bloomberg Law policy that extends beyond the summer of 2013 and will remain in effect until further notice.
LexisNexis Law students may use Lexis  Advance during May – August    while they are working at a firm, corporation for a judge or governmental agency.  This LexisNexis policy is for Summer 2013 only.
Westlaw Students will have 40 hours on Westlaw Classic and 40 hours on WestlawNext in June and the     same in July. Students using the 40 hours may not use their password for commercial purposes but may use their password for educational purposes. Beyond the 40 hour allotment, a student will need to extend his or her password per the five reasons below. If they don’t qualify under one of the reasons below, then they will be limited to the 40 hours.- Summer law school classes

– Law review or law journal work

– Project for a professor

– Moot court

– Unpaid, nonprofit public-interest internship/externship pro bono work required for graduation

This is a standing Westlaw policy that extends beyond the summer of 2013 and will remain in effect until further notice.
