Student Poetry Contests – Two $200 Prizes

The UB Libraries are pleased to announce the annual Student Poetry Contests for University at Buffalo students.

Two contests for two prizes of $200 each are offered for the best poem or group of poems submitted by UB students. The contests are co-sponsored by the Friends of the University Libraries and the University Libraries.

The Academy of American Poets (AAP) University & College Poetry Prize is open to UB graduate and undergraduate students. Winning poems are published by AAP, and will appear on the Univeristy Libraries website.

The Friends of the University Libraries Undergraduate Poetry Prize is open to UB undergraduate students only. Winning poems will appear on the University Libraries website.

The deadline for submission of poems for both contests is Friday, MARCH 9, 2007. Entries should be sent or delivered to:

Contest Guidelines:

  • Submissions must include a cover sheet with the following information :

     

    • Student’s name
    • Name of prize or prizes for which the entry is submitted
    • Student’s status as undergraduate or graduate student
    • Student’s address, email, and telephone number
  • Only one copy of poem or poems is required for consideration in both contests.
  • Each submission should consist of one or more poems, a maximum of five pages typewritten and double-spaced.
  • Poetry in electronic format may be submitted. Follow contest guidelines and provide web address for the poem(s). Student’s name should not appear within the text of the electronic poem(s), or prominently on the web page.
  • The student’s name should not appear on the poems, only on the cover sheet.
  • Entries submitted via EMAIL must have “Poetry Contests” in the subject line, and be sent to library@buffalo.edu.
  • Questions about submissions or contest guidelines should be addressed to library@buffalo.edu or by phoning the Undergraduate Library at 716-645-2944, ext. 239.
  • All Contest entries are retained in the collections of the University Archives.

This year’s Student Poetry Contest awards will be presented on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Noon in the Special Collections Research Room, 420 Capen Hall, UB North Campus.

The Academy of American Poets was founded in 1934 to support American poets in all stages of their careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry. The Academy sponsors national programs and several of the most important awards for poetry in the U.S. The Academy’s University and College Poetry Prize is now offered at 180 colleges and universities each year.
