Collection Development Manual arts & sciences libraries
>Reasons for Withdrawal
A. Multiple Copies
To arrive at a reasonable number of copies to keep, a guideline has been developed. Its purpose is to aid student assistants making preliminary judgements regarding the number of copies to keep and/or withdraw and the subject specialist in his/her deliberations.
Guideline:
If the total number of circulations of all the copies is less than 6, then one copy is retained. If the number is more than 6, then two copies are retained. This also applies to adding a copy.B. Duplicate Sets
There appears to be no seeming difference except the date and place of publication.
C. Duplicate Volumes in a Set
Confirm that those volumes being kept are all of the same edition.
D. Superseded Editions
E. Publication Date Prior to 1850
This category of materials should be considered for Closed Stack Area. Refer to the separate document Closed Stacks Policies and Procedures in the Manual.
F. Language of Book
Books in languages other than German, French, Spanish, Italian or Russian. This does not apply to the P-PZ section. Editions in other languages will be retained relative to the subject specialist's judgement.
G. Out-of-Scope
These categories will vary significantly by discipline. The following are only offered as examples:
Juvenile
Textbooks
Pamphlet Materials - Usually less than 30 pages and in pamphlet type bindng, e.g. program outlines, reports of meetings, occasional publications, etc.
Other - Each subject specialist may wish to develop his/her criteria for out-of-scope candidates. See "Present Weeding Criteria" in Stanley J. Slote, Weeding Library Collections II, 2nd rev. ed. (1982), Chapter 4, pp. 35-42.
